I-Search Part I
The topic I have chosen for my documented argument is Physician Assisted Suicide. Assisted suicide is defined as someone providing an individual with the information, guidance and means to take his or her own life with the intention that they will be used for this purpose. When it is a doctor who helps another person to kill themselves it is called Physician Assisted Suicide. My argument on this topic is that Physician Assisted Suicide should be legalized in all states in the U.S.
I know quite a bit about my topic already. When I was a sophomore in high school I did a ten page research paper on euthanasia which has a lot to do with physician assisted suicide. Physician assisted suicide was only a subtopic in my paper on euthanasia so I decided to make it my main topic for my documented argument. I already know of many important issues that pertain to this topic such as important people and court cases (Jack Kevorkian, Karen Ann Quinlan). I know a little bit about the states that have already legalized physician assisted suicide, mostly the passing of Oregon’s death with dignity act; but I would also like to learn more about the other states that have also legalized physician assisted suicide.
A research question to guide me through the research process is “how does the debate on physician assisted suicide today compare to the debate from when the topic first became very popular in the 1990’s?”
